Hallelujah for Date Nights
Justin and I religiously have at least one date night a week. Between work, health, puppy, and social commitments, it can be difficult to squeeze in an evening with no interruptions. We often find ourselves at the end of a long day, falling into bed together and lazing about with the dog and an episode of This is Us (ermagerd you HAVE to watch this show if you’re not already!!). I’m not ashamed that after three years we have a routine. I actually love how comfortable and natural we are with each other.
Nevertheless, by scheduling in time to focus on one another (no screens, no distractions), we ensure we get the quality time that’s so important for healthy partnerships… Quality time not spent lounging very unsexily in front of my man, in a unisex onesie, while killing a bag of baked Lays dipped in Nutella… Don’t laugh, you do it too!
Since we’re both restaurant obsessed foodies, usually, we’ll head out for dinner for a date. Lately, Minami in Yaletown has been our go to for off the charts sushi and cocktails.
Double Dates or Nah?
You don’t have to ball out on $200 dinner for an excellent date night though. Going to a workout class together, cooking at home, setting up a sex swing, or gold old reliable netflix and chill dates are all great options too! Usually it’s just the two of us, but we’ll occasionally mix it up, ditch the sushi, try somewhere new, and maybe even join some friends a double date. *Which is twice the fun if you’re swingers! Which we’re not, I have just been watching wayyy too many interesting sex documentaries lately!
It’s not always practical to schedule in a date night either, it takes effort to nurture a healthy relationship. Prioritizing time with your partner is a huge part of that. Yet if you can occasionally spend quality time with bae AND catch up with people you actually like being around, why not kill two birds with one stone?
Except the African feminist part of me CRINGED when Justin said we were meeting our friends Tim and Barb for a date night at the Trump Champagne Lounge in downtown Vancouver. “Errrr- I don’t actually want to support anything associated with Trump”, was my reaction. Until I realized he wasn’t nearly as involved with the project as I thought (he doesn’t see profit from the restaurant, club, or lounges). So into my faux fur I jumped, and off we went!
Date Night at the Trump Champagne Lounge-
One thing I can say without question is that the details at the Champagne Lounge are ON POINT! Comfortable neutral seating areas with stunning marble accents are the perfect setting for a trendy luxury date night.
If you’re from Vancouver, or only in town for a couple nights, this lounge is a super chill place to try a new drink or enjoy good DJ-ing (note that the DJ only comes in after 10pm). Bring your boo or some girlfriends, and enjoy the crazily stocked bar! Beware of how “dark side of the moon” you plan on going though. Drinks can get pricey here ($18-25).
I don’t usually expect a hotel lounge to be so exquisitely designed. Maybe Tim, Barbara, and Justin helped me enjoy the Trump Champagne Lounge even more by being such great dates. Or maybe I was able to move past my prejudices and enjoy the lounge for what it is. A beautiful place to spend a few luxuriously chill hours 🙂
