Blogging: Taking Photos Anywhere

Creatives should always have a camera on hand, especially when lifestyle blogging. You never know when you’ll run into that stunningly foamy latte or that perfectly textured wall. Yet sometimes you’re behind on your content creation, and that latte is no where to be found. That’s when knowing how to create a photo opportunity anywhere comes in handy.

Now I love a living wall just as much as the next girl, but one of the most wonderful things I’ve learned since blogging has been how to make anything, anyone, and anywhere beautiful. If you try hard enough, you can photograph anything and make it attractive to someone else.

I try to do a style update every once in awhile. This shoot I did with a girlfriend in an alley, in East Vancouver (not the best neighbourhood), in the harsh sunlight of midday, with an enormous hat on. I’m not sure I could have made this any worse of a location without roadkill being involved. Luckily, I have a few tricks I use when creating an impromptu photo op.

Try different angles

Knowing what angle to shoot your subject from is vital! If you tilt or shift your camera slightly you could be offering an entirely new perspective. Try shooting from different angles to help you find an artistic direction to go in. Remember that often your angles will also depend on your lighting.

Work with the lighting

Use your lighting as best you can. Maybe the purse you’re shooting looks better in the sun, or maybe facing against it? The goal is to showcase your subject.

Be confident

When you are purposeful with your work, the effort shows. You can take pictures in an alley for all anyone knows (this shoot for example) yet have the confidence to bring it from grimy to editorial.

Use a prop

If all else fails, use a prop! Using props will help draw the eye in the direction you want. Also an Audi does quite a good job sprucing up an alley… Okay so I cheated!!

Nonetheless, knowing how to create a photo opportunity in nearly any situation is a wonderful skill for blogging, but for all photography lovers as well! Who needs the latte, when you can turn anyone into a latte? Teach a man to fish-

  • I think this alley looks pretty great actually. Love the color/texture of the wall! The car is a bit too distracting in my opinion. Love that shoe shot from behind, I’ve never tried a shoe shot from that angle before!
